About Matt Scalf
I’m a self-taught artist creating work that’s more about feeling than form. My art is driven by emotion. Layered with texture, movement, and energy. Drips, smudges, shapes, and fractured colors capture thoughts and chaos. I don’t follow a plan. I let emotion lead. Each creation is a snapshot of something internal I can’t explain, only express.
I grew up skateboarding, playing drums in a grunge band, and sleeping in the back of a van after gigs. That chaotic, loud, fast, imperfect energy shaped me, and it still runs through everything I make. I still paint like that. Chaotic energy. Messy. No clean lines. Just feeling. Just movement.
Music doesn’t sit in the background for me. It bleeds into the paint. Bands like Radiohead, Blonde Redhead, Modest Mouse, and Big Thief are constant sources of inspiration. Songs that feel like open wounds or waking dreams.
I love painting abstracts, faces, objects, and human figures the most. I'm inspired by what’s rough, worn, or overlooked. Graffiti-covered walls, crumbling buildings, blurred faces, shattered windows, photos without enough light. I don’t want perfect. I want honest.
Most of my favorite artists are unknown. They create because they love it. Most of the best art I've seen, will never hang in a gallery. It never asked for attention.
I don’t paint to impress. I paint to release something. To remember. To capture a flicker of emotion before it disappears. And maybe, if I’ve done it right, someone else will feel it too.
Like a song you didn’t know you needed, until you hear at the perfect moment and it speaks what you couldn’t put into words.
